This extraordinary wall-mounted clothes dryer, "Perfection Clothes Drier," is an original piece of American household history from the Victorian era. Manufactured by the L. Hopkins Manufacturing Company in North Girard, Pennsylvania (USA), the model is based on an 1887 patent and is now one of the most sought-after historical household items of its kind.
The ingenious mechanism allows the eight solid wooden arms to fold out in a fan shape and then fold back compactly against the wall after use. A robust cast-iron bracket securely locks the structure in place, testifying to the high quality craftsmanship of these early industrial products.
Crafted from solid American hardwood – likely oak or ash – and combined with a decorative brass plaque and cast-iron fittings, the clothes dryer boasts a beautiful, decades-old patina. Originally, it was used in kitchens or laundry rooms for gentle air-drying of laundry. Today, it is an exceptional collector's item and an impressive decorative object in country, industrial, or vintage styles.
The original brass plaque bears the inscription "Perfection Clothes Drier – Patented by L. Hopkins – North Girard, PA," underscoring the authenticity of this rare piece.
A fascinating example of American engineering from the late 19th century – rarely preserved and with an impressive charisma.
