Telephone Token - 1970s

For decades, the Gettone Telefonico was a part of everyday life in Italy. Before phone cards were introduced, this brass token served as a means of payment for public telephones until 2001 and became an integral part of the Italian streetscape.

A special feature: The Gettone Telefonico was much more than just a telephone coin. For decades, it functioned in Italy as a stable medium of exchange, constantly adapting to the current price of a public telephone call during inflation. Instead of constantly introducing new coin denominations, the Gettone remained a uniform means of payment and was regularly adjusted to the respective call price.

For many, it evokes memories of family holidays in Italy: calling home from a telephone booth, the campsite or the small kiosk where one bought the necessary Gettoni. Today, it is a charming piece of everyday history and a nostalgic souvenir of past travels.

Each Gettone bears a four-digit embossing that reveals its period of manufacture: the first two digits stand for the year, the last two for the month of embossing. Depending on the version, the Gettoni come from one of the traditional Italian manufacturers ESM, CMM, IPM or UT/UP.
