This compact ashtray was produced as a promotional item for the French cigarette brand Gitanes. The deep blue glaze, the white lettering "GITANES INTERNATIONALES," and the characteristic black silhouette of the Gitanes figure give the piece its distinctive graphic impact.
The softly rounded, almost square shape differs significantly from the strictly geometric models by Moulin des Loups. The ashtray was manufactured by the long-established French ceramic manufacturer Gien. The corresponding maker's mark can be found on the underside.
Such promotional ashtrays were produced for use in French cafés, bars, and tabacs, combining everyday utilitarian ceramics with the striking brand aesthetics of that time. Stylistically, the model dates back to around the 1960s and is equally suitable today as a small tray for keys, coins, or jewelry.
This is a vintage utility item with corresponding signs of age and use.
A beautiful piece of French advertising and café culture featuring the iconic Gitanes design.
