These two hand-painted miniature lifebuoys are vintage mementos from the British shipping company P&O (Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Company). They feature the passenger ships Stratheden and Canberra, which traveled international sea routes for decades.
The red and white lifebuoy commemorates the Canberra and, alongside the ship's name, features the inscriptions "P & O," "LONDON," and the year "1978." The second, blue and white lifebuoy is dedicated to the Stratheden, which entered service as early as 1937. Its hand-painted design displays various flags and place names such as "TENERIFFE," "MADEIRA," and "CEUTA."
Such small lifebuoys were produced as souvenirs for passengers, handmade by crew members. The intricate painting and the encircling cords give each piece its individual character. Together, they form a decorative set and a wonderful testament to British passenger shipping.
