The Japanese Higonokami pocket knife is characterized by its simple construction. The blade is held in place by an axial rivet in the folded brass handle, and the knife is opened using a lever (Japanese: chikiri) on the spine of the blade. Despite its simple overall construction, the blade is of very high quality and is made of three-layered carbon steel.

The Higonokami knife is used for all small cutting tasks in everyday life and was used by Japanese schoolchildren as a sharpener or for various handicrafts until the early 1960s.
