The Whale Paperweight is a solid cast iron paperweight in the shape of a whale. It is made by Sumitani Saburo Shoten, a traditional manufacturer from the metal city of Takaoka in Toyama Prefecture, which has been producing everyday metal objects since 1939.
The paperweight is made of Nambu Tekki cast iron, a Japanese craft tradition known for its robustness, durability, and characteristic dark surface. Its solid weight reliably holds loose papers in place, while the minimalist whale shape gives the object a calm, sculptural presence.
In Japanese symbolism, the whale represents strength, endurance, and a deep connection to the sea. Thus, the Whale Paperweight is not only a practical desk object but also a small design piece with a maritime character.
