Bistrot Loupe Decanter Jourdan

This exceptional carafe is a reproduction of the mouth-blown models that were common in bars and bistros throughout Europe at the end of the 19th century. What's special about it: Once filled with water, the curved base—the so-called loupe (French for "magnifying glass")—acts like a magnifying glass, highlighting the writing below. This sophisticated optical effect made the carafe a popular advertising tool during the Belle Époque.

Water carafes like this were among the most important accessories for preparing absinthe at the time. The water was slowly poured over sugar cubes until they completely dissolved, enhancing the drink.
