The Rabbit Incense Holder is a small, finely crafted object made of pewter, inspired by one of the most famous picture scrolls in Japanese art history: Choju-giga. The 12th- and 13th-century depictions show animals such as hares, frogs, and monkeys in humorous, human-like scenes and are considered one of the earliest forms of Japanese caricature—often even referred to as "Japan's oldest manga."
The figure takes up the motif of the hare from this historic scroll and translates it into a small, decorative everyday object. The incense stick holder securely holds a thin incense stick in place, while the minimalist form and matte pewter create a calm, timeless appearance.
With its compact size, the Rabbit Incense Holder is ideal for a desk, windowsill, or side table—a small detail that combines tradition, design, and everyday ritual.
The Nippon Kodo incense sticks shown are available here.
