This exceptional brass ashtray in the organic style of the 1950s corresponds to model 3677 by the Wiener Werkstätte Carl Auböck. Its free-flowing, asymmetrical shape is characteristic of Austrian post-war modernism and combines sculptural design with a practical function.
The small bowl is made of solid brass with a dark patinated surface. Particularly appealing is the greenish shimmering, irregularly textured interior, which forms a beautiful contrast to the gold-colored polished brass rim. A curved lip extending to one side serves as a rest for a cigarette or cigar and blends harmoniously into the flowing shape.
Carl Auböck (1900–1957) is considered one of the significant Austrian designers of the 20th century. The Wiener Werkstätte Auböck became particularly known for its brass works, in which traditional metalworking was combined with modern, often biomorphic shapes. The ashtray, with its unusual proportions and contrasting surface design, is a beautiful example of this design language.
