Gauloises Longues – France, 1970s

This ashtray from the French cigarette brand Gauloises Longues dates from the 1970s and is a fine example of French advertising and bistro culture of that era.

The rectangular shape is covered in a bold blue glaze, into which the lettering "GAULOISES LONGUES" and the brand's characteristic winged helmet are embossed. The fine crazing of the glaze adds further character to the surface.

Such promotional ashtrays were made for cafés, bars, and tobacconists, where Gauloises was one of the ubiquitous French brands. Today, the compact dish is equally suitable as a vide-poche for coins, keys, or jewelry.
