This exceptional pipe holder, made of heavy, dark patinated brass, comes from France and can be stylistically dated to the 1950s or 1960s. Its organic, asymmetrical form is reminiscent of the sculptural metalwork of European post-war modernism, particularly the designs of Carl Auböck and Walter Bosse.
The small pipe holder has an upward-opening bowl shape with an elegantly curved rim. The deep black surface forms a beautiful contrast to the warm golden tone of the brass, which particularly highlights the flowing contour. The minimalist design and unusual proportions give the piece an almost sculptural character.
Weighing around 230 grams, the pipe holder is remarkably solid. Its shape and surface treatment correspond to the characteristic black-and-gold aesthetic of numerous European brass works from the 1950s and 1960s. As a small decorative bowl, it is also an interesting example of organic mid-century design.
