The Blue Pencil – A Minha Liberdade É de Todos commemorates a special chapter in Portuguese history. During the Estado Novo dictatorship, a blue pencil became a symbol of state censorship: for decades, censors used it to mark passages of text, images, and other content that were forbidden from being published.
After 48 years of dictatorship, censorship ended with the Carnation Revolution on April 25, 1974. The blue pencil, once a tool for restricting freedom of expression, is consciously reinterpreted here – as a pencil of freedom.
The pencil features the Portuguese phrase "A minha liberdade é de todos" – "My freedom belongs to everyone."
