This original French pyrogène dates back to around 1900 and was crafted as a promotional item for absinthe and spirits from Bourg-en-Bresse. The blue lettering "ABSINTHES ET EAUX DE VIE DE BOURG-EN-BRESSE" refers directly to its original use in French café and bistro culture.
The upper cup holds the matches, while the finely grooved surface of the base serves as the striking area. Of particular appeal is the direct link to the French absinthe culture of the pre-World War I era. Original pyrogènes of this type are rare today—especially in such a well-preserved and complete condition.
The pyrogène is supplied with 100 matching strike-anywhere matches. To strike, the match head should be drawn sideways across the grooved striking surface—not from top to bottom.
