This original French pyrogène was made around 1900 as an advertising object for Champagne Antonel from Épernay. The combination of match holder and striker was standard equipment in French cafés, bistros, and bars at the time.
The upper cup bears the inscription "Champagne Antonel," while the base features advertising for the Champagne house from Épernay. The finely grooved surface of the base was used for striking "strike-anywhere" matches. Original pyrogènes from this period are now comparatively rare—especially in such a well-preserved and complete condition.
The pyrogène comes with 100 matching strike-anywhere matches. To strike, the match head is drawn sideways across the grooved friction surface—not from top to bottom.
This is a utility object over 100 years old with corresponding slight signs of age and use. For its age, the piece is in remarkably beautiful condition. Please also refer to the detailed images.
