The Dolphin Paperweight is a solid cast iron paperweight in the shape of a dolphin. It is made by Sumitani Saburo Shoten, a long-established manufacturer from the metal city of Takaoka in Toyama Prefecture, which has been producing timeless everyday metal objects since 1939.
The paperweight is made of Nambu Tekki cast iron – a Japanese craft tradition valued for its robustness, durability, and characteristic dark surface. Its pleasant weight reliably keeps loose papers in place, while the softly sculpted dolphin shape gives the object a calm, sculptural appearance.
In Japanese symbolism, the dolphin stands for harmony, intelligence, and connection to water. Thus, the Dolphin Paperweight combines functionality with a subtle maritime aesthetic, bringing a piece of Japanese craftsmanship to the desk.
