French Stoneware Storage Jar with Salt Glaze – 1½ Liters

This antique salt-glazed stoneware storage pot originates from France and was made around the turn of the 20th century. With its simple cylindrical shape and bright, slightly glossy salt glaze, it is a beautiful example of traditional utility ceramics, as used in kitchens and pantries for generations.

The incised marking "1½" was scratched into the wet clay by the potter before firing and indicates the original capacity of approximately 1.5 liters. Such vessels were used to store lard, butter, pickled vegetables, or other durable foods and were particularly long-lasting due to their dense stoneware.

The characteristic surface was created using the salt-firing process, where salt was added to the kiln during firing. This developed a durable, slightly glossy glaze that made stoneware vessels indispensable everyday objects for many decades.

Today, the pot impresses as an authentic collector's item and decorative home object. Whether as a vase for dried flowers, a kitchen vessel, or a rustic eye-catcher – its simple form harmonizes with a wide variety of interior styles.
