GIR Ceramic Ashtray with Plumber Figurine – France, 1960s

This extraordinary French promotional ashtray was made for GIR, a provider of plumbing technology. Particularly striking is the mounted, dark-blue glazed figure of a plumber wearing a cap and overalls, standing on a triangular, grey-blue ceramic dish.

The humorous design combines a classic advertising object with a small ceramic sculpture. The GIR lettering can be found both on the figure’s clothing and as a relief inside the dish. The glossy glaze in various shades of blue gives the object its characteristic expression.

On the underside is the maker’s mark of the French ceramic manufacturer Procéram. The dish was produced in the 1960s as a promotional item for business partners and customers in the plumbing industry.

Today, this unusual object is also excellent for use as a decorative tray or as a standalone ceramic figure.
