The Incense Holder – Monkey is a small tin incense stick holder, whose motif is based on one of the most famous picture scrolls in Japanese art history: Choju-giga. These drawings, created in the 12th–13th centuries, depict animals such as rabbits, frogs, and monkeys in lively, humorous scenes and are considered an early form of Japanese caricature – often even called the "oldest manga in Japan."
The small monkey figure picks up on this historical motif and translates it into a simple, decorative everyday object. The holder accommodates a thin incense stick and ensures that it burns safely and steadily. The minimalist form and matte tin give the object a calm yet characterful appearance.
With its compact size, the Incense Holder – Monkey fits on a desk, windowsill, or side table, bringing a small moment of tranquility into everyday life.
