This antique ceramic plate features a humorous fishing scene from the "Les Sports – La Pêche" series. Two anglers stand on the bank of a pond, with the supposed catch providing the humorous punchline: instead of a fish, one of them has reeled in a corset. The caption "Épatant!! une friture de Baleines!!" – roughly translating to "Fabulous! A portion of whales!" – wittily plays on the unusually large "catch."
The colorful illustration with the lettering "LES SPORTS – LA PÊCHE" is in the style of French-Belgian humorous utilitarian ceramics from the early 20th century. The combination of a finely drawn landscape, bold colors, and typographical elements makes the plate a particularly decorative piece.
The series is attributed to Boch Frères Keramis in La Louvière, Belgium, and likely dates from the 1920s to early 1930s. An embossed letter mark is located on the underside.
On the back, the glaze shows clear age-related crazing. Additionally, minor signs of wear and discoloration are visible on the foot ring. Please also refer to the detailed photographs.
An unusual piece of Belgian ceramic with a wonderfully humorous depiction of the leisure culture of its time.
