This original ashtray from the French Loterie Nationale is a charming piece of mid-20th-century French advertising and bistro culture.
It was manufactured by the long-established French faience manufacturer Saint-Clément. The glazed ceramic features a beautiful lavender-blue to violet-blue hue, while the relief lettering "LOTERIE NATIONALE" circles the center of the bowl. The slightly scalloped edge with its small cigarette rests is particularly characteristic.
The Loterie Nationale, the predecessor to today's French state lottery, commissioned such promotional items for cafés, bistros, and retail outlets. Today, the piece is equally well-suited for use as a small tray or vide-poche.
This is a vintage item. Slight signs of wear and fine age-related crazing may be present and are part of the piece's authentic character.
