This exceptional pyrogene is a faithful reproduction of the match holders found throughout Europe – especially in France – in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Back then, pyrogenes often sat on bistro or bar tables and served several purposes:

• The matches were stored in the upper cylindrical container.

• The ribbed surface was used for striking; "strike-anywhere" matches are required.

• In addition, many companies used these decorative pieces as promotional items, often distributing them to bars free of charge.
